Final Fantasy is one of the first RPGs I ever played back with the first entry in the series so many years ago on the NES. To be honest, I haven’t followed the FF series closely since the release of Final Fantasy VII. I tried the later titles, but they didn’t do much for me. I’ve always been a fan of the more old-school entries as IV and VI are my favorites. Perhaps it’s just the way I grew up with the series, but as time went on, Final Fantasy lost a certain feel; I no longer felt connected to the worlds and characters.
However, after seeing the Final Fantasy XV trailer, I have to admit that while I remain skeptical of whether or not I will enjoy this game, it certainly looks very interesting. The trailer has a bittersweet feel to it, with the a cover of the classic Ben E. King song “Stand by Me”, performed by Florence and The Machine. Some might think this is an odd choice, but watch the trailer and listen to the song closely (it kicks in at about 1:07). Faintly in the background, you can hear remnants of a classic FF song.
Perhaps I’m just a sentimental sucker, but I felt touched by that throwback, and it’s been a long time since anything Final Fantasy related has had an impact on me other than disappointment or indifference. So with that, I think I will definitely give Final Fantasy another try after all these years and hopefully we can all find something to enjoy in the latest entry in one of the world’s most famous RPG series.
